URGENT COMMUNIQUE REGARDING THE REPREHENSIBLE ASSASSINATION OF COMPAÑERO JOSÉ TAVICO TZUNUN, DELEGATE OF THE K'ICHE' PEOPLE'S COUNCIL IN SANTA CRUZ DEL QUICHÉ
The communities and community authorities of the K'iche' People's Council in Defense of Life, Mother Nature, Earth and Indigenous Territory (CPK)
To the national and international public:
We denounce the violent assassination of our compañero José Tavico Tzunun on June 12 at around one o'clock in the morning. Two heavily armed men shot at his house in the community of Sibacá III in the municipality of Santa Cruz del Quiché. The two men violently entered his property and killed him; afterward they fled.
Our compañero José Tavico Tzunun was an active member of the K'iche' Peoples' Council. Along with other delegates, he organized community meetings to reflect on the effects of megaprojects and the presence of transnational companies. He was also a member of the commission that organized the community referendum carried out in Santa Cruz. According to other delegates from the same community and other nearby communities, in days prior [to his assassination] he had received telephone threats with the following message: “If you continue bringing the people together for meetings, you will pay the consequences and not only you, we'll deal with your other compañero behind you.” (The messages referred to another delegate, Tomas Quixtan)
For the aforementioned reasons, the murder of our compañero cannot be linked to common crime. The situation indicates that the murder of our compañero was the culmination of the threats he had received, as none of the valuables in his home or business were robbed.
As the K'iche' People's Council, we are outraged and we repudiate this cowardly act.
WE DEMAND
1. That the state justice system immediately investigates the crime and arrests the intellectual and material authors of the assassination of our compañero José Tavico Tzunun.
2. The immediate suspension of the mining and hydroelectric licenses in our territory, as it is clear that the presence of transnational companies brings terror, death and destruction.
3. That the local and national government of the “State of Guatemala” respect life, autonomous community organization, the peoples who co-inhabit the K'iche' territory.
To all the communities that defend our territory
We call upon you to continue on our path with great courage and collective effort. We cannot flag, as we exercise our very rights as peoples. Our effort to give all for all is for our LIFE, with respect for the life of our grandfathers, grandmothers and ancestors, and for the LIFE of our grandsons and granddaughters.
YES TO LIFE!
OUR BROTHER JOSÉ TAVICO TZUNUN IS, WAS, AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE PART OF OUR K'ICHE' PEOPLE'S COUNCIL.

COMUNICADO URGENTE ANTE EL VIL ASESINATO DEL COMPAÑERO JOSE TAVICO TZUNUN, DELEGADO DEL CONSEJO DE PUEBLOS K´ICHE´S, EN SANTA CRUZ DEL QUICHÉ
Las comunidades y autoridades comunitarias que integramos el Consejo de Pueblos K’iche’s, por la defensa de la vida, madre naturaleza tierra y territorio (CPK).
A la opinión pública nacional e internacional denunciamos:
El violento asesinato del compañero José TavicoTzunun, ocurrido el día 12 de junio a la una de la madrugada aproximadamente. Dicho acto lo realizaron dos hombres fuertemente armados quienes balearon su casa, ubicada en la comunidad de Sibacá III del municipio de Santa Cruz del Quiché, entraron violentamente en su propiedad y lo asesinaron; posteriormente se dieron a la fuga.
El compañero José TavicoTzunun fue miembro activo del Consejo de Pueblos K’iche’s, él, con otros delegados, realizaba reuniones comunitarias para reflexionar sobre las consecuencias de los megaproyectos y las empresas transnacionales, fue miembro de la comisión de consulta comunitaria de buena fe realizada en Santa Cruz. Según manifestaron otros delegados de la misma comunidad y comunidades cercanas, en días anteriores había recibido amenazas vía telefónica, dejando el siguiente mensaje: “Si seguís reuniendo a la gente, te atenés a las consecuencias y no sólo sos vos, atrás de vos nos echaremos a tu otro compañero”. (Hablaban del otro delegado Tomas Quixtan)
Por lo anteriormente expuesto, el asesinato del compañero no se puede vincular con delincuencia común, todo indica que la muerte del compañero fue el cumplimiento de las amenazas recibidas, pues todas las cosas de valor que se encontraban en su casa y negocio, no fueron robadas.
Como Consejo de Pueblos K’iche’s estamos indignados y manifestamos nuestro repudio ante este hecho cobarde y:
EXIGIMOS
1. Al sistema de justicia Estatal, la pronta investigación de los hechos para dar con los actores intelectuales y materiales del asesinato del compañero José TavicoTzunùn.
2. Exigimos la inmediata suspensión de las licencias mineras e hidroeléctricas en el territorio, pues es claro que la presencia de empresas transnacionales, genera terror, muerte y destrucción.
3. Al gobierno local y nacional del “Estado de Guatemala” exigimos el respeto a la vida y a la organización autónoma comunitaria y a los pueblos que cohabitamos este territorio K’iche’.
A todas las comunidades que defendemos nuestro territorio
Les decimos que continuemos nuestro caminar, con mucho valor y esfuerzo colectivo, que no desmayemos, pues estamos en el cumplimiento de nuestros plenos derechos como pueblos, y porque este esfuerzo de dar el todo por el todo, es por nuestra VIDA, en respeto a la vida de nuestros abuelos y abuelas y por la VIDA de nuestros nietos y nietas.
¡SÍ A LA VIDA!,
NUESTRO HERMANO JOSE TAVICO TZUNUN ES, FUE Y SEGUIRÁ SIENDO PARTE DE NUESTRO CONSEJO DE PUEBLOS K´ICHE´S.
